But the way he let her down was by dying, in the song it says "It ain't wise to need someone as much as I depended on you" they were going to get divorced and then decided to try and make it work and then he goes and leaves her tragically. You invest your all in a relationship, she depended to much on him and her heart got broke, no fault of his but that is life.
